An August Wrap-Up
Goodbye August, you truly did slip away into a moment of time. Here is some of the media I consumed in August!
Books
I read 20 books in August, the most of the year by a wide margin. I had been dealing with reading burnout since 2023 and I finally feel like I am coming out of that. 14 of those 20 were manga (I will finish Nana soon I swear), 1 was a short story (I’m never sure how to count that on StoryGraph), 1 was a book of poetry, 1 was a collection of short stories (that I read most of last year and picked it up again), 3 were novels. There was 1 bookclub read (Goddess Complex), 1 re-read (Elatsoe), and 1 from my physical tbr (The Memory Librarian). It was a very good reading month and I’m excited for what September will bring as I try the 30 in 30 challenge and read the thick The Way of Thorn and Thunder.
Movies
All the movies that I watched in August were date night movies! I’m hoping in September I have some solo-watches. Here are all the movies I watched and mini-reviews:
Mickey 17
This was so funny and showed that Robert Pattinson is actually a great actor. A lot of the letterbox’d reviews for this were stupid and made me sad for the media literacy of the world. Highly recommend (and I need to watch Parasite).
Pokémon 3: The Movie
My fiancée and I are watching all the Pokémon movies (and X-Men movies in exchange) and this one was pretty good! I don’t think it was as good as Metwo Fights back, but it was very nice to see Delia.
X-Men: The Last Stand
This was so much better than I remember and what the fanbase says. It has some obvious flaws, but Magneto’s “"No needle shall ever touch my skin again" is so powerful.
The Fall Guy
This was such a fun action rom-com that is perfect for a date night! It has great action scenes and a nice soundtrack, and I adore how it elevates the lesser known roles that are essential in movies. I definitely recommend.
Pokemon: Mewtwo Returns
Definitely not as good as Mewtwo Fights Back, but so cute and a nice length.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Sadly, nowhere near as good as I remember. The details were very hazy and the CGI has not aged well (the first 3’s actually aged very well). I’m sad it’s not as good as my memory, but hopefully the rest of the movies won’t disappoint!
TV Shows
The only show I finished in August was The Pitt. It is the best modern medical drama, and it’s not even a competition. I sobbed so hard. Please watch this. A show I started was the anime adaption of Anne of the Green Gables titled “Anne Shirley.” It’s very cute and I will continue, but it does struggle to keep my attention at time. I’ve never read Anne of the Green Gables, so it’s funny that this is my introduction to the classic.
For shows I’ve continued in August:
Abbott Elementary
A really funny sit-com that I’m enjoying a lot!
Family Law
Procedural drama that is so entertaining.
Dan Da Dan
I am enjoying season 2, but some parts of it have made me uncomfortable. The mangaka should have read more than 100 shoujo manga.
The Summer I Turned Pretty
Jenny Han loves making trilogies where the first is a cute rom-com and then it skydives to the bottom of the ocean. I do not like season 3.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury
I do really enjoy this anime, I don’t know why it’s taking me so long to finish!
Overall, August was a great month, but I am so ready for fall! What are your August favorites?

Always excited to hear about what you're reading!
